Audible offers two types of membership options: Standard and Premium Plus.

With the Standard plan, you get 1 audiobook each month to listen to while your membership is active, but you don’t permanently own the title.

Premium Plus unlocks the full Audible experience, including unlimited access to the Plus Catalog with over 150,000 audiobooks and podcasts, plus monthly credits you can redeem for any audiobook and keep forever.

New Audible users get a 30-day free trial with 1 audiobook included, while Prime members get 2 audiobooks during the trial.

Types of audible membership plans

Note: Audible previously offered a basic Plus plan with unlimited access to the Plus Catalog, but it was discontinued after the Standard plan launched.

What Are the Different Audible Membership Plans?

Audible currently offers two types of membership plans and they differ in ownership, catalog access, and value.

Here is the full breakdown of each plan.

Audible Standard Plan

The Audible Standard plan was introduced in 2026 and it offers.

  • 1 Audiobook per month
  • You can choose books from Audible’s full catalog (1M+ titles)
  • You can only listen to selected books while subscribed

Important: You are borrowing the audiobook, not owning it. Once you cancel your subscription, you lose access to your selected books.

In my experience, this plan is quite restrictive. You are limited to 1 audiobook a month with no Plus Catalog access, so it’s not ideal if you want to own books or listen to more than one title monthly.

Audible Premium Plus Plan

This is Audible’s most popular and highest-value plan.

You get:

  • 1 (or more) credits per month. Each credit is used to redeem any audiobook of your choice from entire catalog.
  • Unlimited access to the Plus Catalog
  • 30% discount on audiobook purchases with cash
  • Access to exclusive member-only sales

Most important benefit: You keep all audiobooks you buy (with credits or cash) forever, even after canceling your membership.

There are four Premium Plus plan options to choose from.

  • Audible Premium Plus – 1 Credit
  • Audible Premium Plus – 2 Credits
  • Audible Premium Plus Annual – 12 Credits
  • Audible Premium Plus Annual – 24 Credits

All Premium Plus members get unlimited access to the Plus Catalog, a curated collection of over 150,000 audiobooks and podcasts that represents roughly 10% of Audible’s full catalog.

You can listen to all Plus Catalog titles as long as your membership remains active.

I love Audible’s credit system because it’s where you get the most value. Instead of paying full price, you can use a credit to grab expensive audiobooks for much less.

Here are a few important things to know about how credits work.

  • 1 Credit = 1 Audiobook, no matter the price. Whether a book costs $15 or $30, you still only spend one credit.
  • When you run out of credits, Audible often gives you the option to buy extra credits at a discounted price. This usually appears when you have 0 or 1 credit left.
extra credits offer

  • If you don’t like a book you bought with a credit, you can return it and get your credit back.
  • Unused credits roll over to the next month, so you don’t lose them immediately. Most credits expire after 12 months.
  • Any audiobook you buy using credits is yours to keep forever, even if you cancel your Audible membership.

In my experience, credits are best used for:

  • Expensive and long books (better value per hour)
  • 2-for-1 credit sales

Which Audible plan is best for you?

For most people, Premium Plus is the best choice. If you are on another plan, you can easily switch to it anytime.

Here’s why:

  • Standard Plan β†’ No ownership of books, only 1 book/ month.
  • Premium Plus β†’ Full membership benefits + ownership of books + member-only sales and discounts,

With Premium Plus, you don’t just borrow the books, you build your own collection.

My Personal Strategy (Tested & Works)

After using Audible for years, here’s what consistently gives the best value:

Step 1: Start with Free Trial

Begin with Premium Plus free trial. This gives you 1 credit to get any audiobook (2 credits if you are Amazon Prime member) and other membership benefits for 1 month.

Step 2: Trigger Retention Offers

When your trial is about to end, pretend to cancel your membership. Audible will show discounted offers to retain you as a customer.

You can directly go to the show offer page and see the discounted offers.

My annual plan was expiring recently, and I received these offers to stay. I chose the $85.99 (12 credits) annual plan, which normally costs $149.50, saving me 42%.

Choose any of the available offers or talk to customer support if you are not happy with listed offers.

Step 3: Aim for Discounted Annual Plan

I recommend the $85.99/year plan with 12 credits, which brings the cost down to around $7 per credit.

Once you have this plan:

  • Use credits for 2-for-1 credit sales or expensive titles.
  • Fill up your wish list with all audiobooks you want and grab them during sales. Audible runs two sitewide sales each year, which is the best time to get years’ worth of listening at up to 85% off.

You can also choose a discounted monthly plan if that suits you better.

Audible Membership Plans Comparison

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of Audible’s plans to help you quickly understand which option gives you the best value based on your listening needs.

One reason Audible is worth it is that it offers different membership plans to suit different needs.
