Choosing between Audible Standard vs Premium Plus can be confusing. The cheaper plan is not always the better value.
In this guide, I compare both memberships based on credits, Plus Catalog access, audiobook ownership, and member deals so you can clearly see which option offers better value for your listening style.
Audible’s 30-day free trial gives you enough time to explore both plans and decide which one fits you best.
What is Audible Standard Plan
Audible introduced the Standard plan in March 2026 as a lower-cost option for casual audiobook listeners. The plan costs $8.99 per month.
With the Standard plan, you can pick 1 audiobook each month from Audible’s entire catalog. You can listen to selected books as long as your membership remains active.
If you cancel your membership, you lose access to all selected books. This is one of the biggest differences between Audible Standard and Premium Plus.
In my experience, the Standard plan feels restrictive as it does not include several popular Audible benefits, including:
- Monthly credits
- Access to the Plus Catalog
- Member-only sales and deals
- Discounts on audiobook purchases
Audible currently offers a 30-day free trial for the Standard plan.

You can check out my detailed review of the Standard plan if you want a deeper breakdown of its features, limitations, and overall value.
What’s Included in Audible Standard Plan
Choose one audiobook each month from Audible’s catalog. Listen as long as your membership is active. If you cancel, access is lost.
Unlimited ad-free podcasts across Audible’s platform, including early access to select shows.
New members can enjoy a 30-day free trial to test the plan.
What is Audible Premium Plus Plan
Premium Plus is Audible’s full-feature membership. It includes the following benefits:
- 1 (or more) credits
- Unlimited access to the Plus Catalog
- Members-only sales
- Discount on cash purchases (usually 30%)
Premium Plus membership includes 1 or more monthly credit. You can redeem a credit for any audiobook in Audible’s catalog, regardless of the audiobook’s price.
That means 1 credit can unlock a $10 audiobook or a $40 audiobook for the same cost.
Unlike the Standard plan, purchased titles (with credits or cash) are yours to keep forever, even if you cancel your membership later.
Audible currently offers four types of Premium Plus plans:

- Audible Premium Plus – 1 Credit
- Audible Premium Plus – 2 Credits
- Audible Premium Plus Annual – 12 Credits
- Audible Premium Plus Annual – 24 Credits
The monthly plans give credits every month, while the annual plans provide all credits upfront.
Premium Plus members get unlimited access to the Plus Catalog, which includes over 150,000 audiobooks, podcasts, and Audible Originals.

You can only access the Plus Catalog titles while your membership remains active.
Audible credits are one of the biggest reasons many listeners choose Premium Plus over Standard.
Credits can unlock bestsellers or long titles that normally cost much more than the monthly membership fee. I always use credits on expensive books or on 2-for-1 credit deals.
Premium Plus members can also:
- Buy additional credits if they run out
- Return audiobooks purchased with credits.
- Reuse refunded credits on another audiobook

Another major benefit of Premium Plus membership is access to Audible’s sales.
Audible regularly offers exclusive sales, including:
- 2-for-1 credit sales
- Cash discount sales
- Sitewide sales
During the sitewide sales, the entire catalog goes on sale for up to 85% off.
These sales can significantly reduce the average cost per audiobook if you buy strategically.
All active deals and promotions are listed on Audible’s sales page.

Audible Standard vs Premium Plus – Which Plan Is Better?
Premium Plus plan offers significantly more value than the Standard plan for most audiobook listeners.
The Standard plan is cheaper, but it also feels restrictive. You only get access to 1 audiobook per month, and lose access to your books selection when you cancel your membership.
If you care about building a permanent audiobook library, Premium Plus is the better option.
For roughly $6 more per month, Premium Plus gives you permanent ownership of purchased titles and many other benefits.
Here are the biggest advantages Premium Plus offers over Standard:
- Access to the Plus Catalog – Over 70,000 audiobooks included with your membership.
- Exclusive Sales – Members-only deals like 2-for-1 credit sales, cash discounts, and sitewide sales.
- Discount on Cash Purchases – Usually around 30% off any audiobook you buy with cash.
- Credit System – Each credit can be used for any title, regardless of price. Perfect for expensive titles.
| Feature | Standard Plan ($8.99/mo) | Premium Plus ($14.95/mo) |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly Audiobook | 1 selection (temporary access) | 1 credit (you own it forever) |
| Ownership of Audiobooks | ✘ No | ✔ Yes |
| Access to Plus Catalog | ✘ No | ✔ Yes (70,000+ titles) |
| Members-only Sales | ✘ No | ✔ Yes |
| Discount on Purchases | ✘ No | ✔ ~30% off |
| Monthly Credits | ✘ No | ✔ Yes |
| Ad-free Podcasts | ✔ Yes | ✔ Yes |
Who Should Choose Audible Standard?
I only recommend the Standard plan to casual listeners who:
- Listen to about 1 audiobook per month
- Do not care about owning audiobooks permanently
- Want the cheapest Audible membership available
The Standard plan works more like a borrowing service than a true audiobook ownership plan.
Who Should Choose Audible Premium Plus?
Premium Plus is the better choice if you:
- Listen to multiple audiobooks per month
- Want to build a audiobook collection
- Buy expensive audiobooks regularly
- Want access to Audible sales and discounts
- Plan to use the Plus Catalog frequently
In my experience, most active audiobook listeners will get far more value from Premium Plus than Standard.
Pro Tip: If you talk to customer support, you can get the Premium Plus Annual 12-credit plan for $85.99. That works out to about $7.17 per month, which is actually cheaper than the Standard plan.
During a 12-month membership, Audible typically runs two sitewide sales. You can further maximize your membership by using credits on expensive titles or during 2-for-1 credit sales.
